Naughty and Nice: Berries and Cream for Two.

My hubby has been out-of-town at a business convention for the past couple of days and I have missed him horribly!  Although he doesn’t have to travel with business often, its hard on both of us when he does have to leave. So, as a special treat for us both, I’ve made up a delicious, grown-up dessert for us to share after putting the monkeys to bed.

This dessert was inspired by my unholy love of Strawberries Romanoff; of which there are several variations available.  I prefer the version made with sour cream and brandy.  I always think of it as the original Russian version, but I found a good recipe for the one served at  La Madeleine’s if you want to give it a shot.

Naughty and Nice: Berries and Cream for Two:

 I used strawberries and blackberries for this dessert simply because that is what I had in the fridge.  Any berries will do…actually, there are several fruits that I can think of that would be wonderful too!  I might just revisit that idea later in the summer…

  Start with the berry mixture in the early evening, that way they have a few hours to sit in the fridge and soak in all of that delicious rum…

  Stir the berries, sugar, and rum gently to help the sugar dissolve.  To this mixture, you also want to add 1/4 teaspoon good quality vanilla.  Be careful not to crush the fruit, you want the fruit to look fresh and ripe, not all squished.

Just before you are ready to serve, mix the ingredients for the cream…

You start with one half cup plain Greek yogurt.  If you want to go all-in, you can use sour cream instead of yogurt.

  Now, there is no substitute for heavy whipping cream in my recipe…the taste is incomparable!!  If that little bit of naughty holds you back from trying this, I’m going to call you a whiner and thumb my nose at you!  

That’s it!  So simple and delicious!!  Just spoon your berries into a beautiful dessert dish or martini glass (don’t forget to pour the rum syrup over the berries!)  Then put a healthy dollop of that luscious cream right on top…Voilá!
